2/22/09 Not much to tell of late.  Puppies continue to be born, adults continue to be trained.  The third barn for the puppies is open but work on further stalls in the barn continues.  There are now 3 barns and the vet facility at Moore Lane now housing the growing population.

2/17/09

The Valentine cookies we sent to the Volunteers at the Metra and Moore Lane were a big hit.  Again a big thank you to the volunteers helping to care and train these dogs.

A Puppy Population Explosion!!!

Volunteers with Operation New Beginnings are approximately 8 weeks post-seizure and the litters are coming fast and furious, with  14-16 females yet to whelp.  Litter size has been 5 - 8 puppies (some more, some less).  We should see the end of the litters in early March, as the Girl Barn and the Boy Barn have been kept quite separate since the dogs were seized.  Many in the Girl Barn recently went into heat, presenting a whole new dimension to the work the Montana Volunteers have been doing.  But each dog in heat was one less litter to expect, so that was good.

Most of us have suppressed the "Jaws on Paws" memories: those days when your pup ate the bottom rung of a chair that was a family heirloom is now a distant memory!  The remote that was destroyed has been replaced; the little squirt guns have been put away.  But if its not too painful, remember the damage those little puppy teeth can do.  Those who have raised a litter or two can remember how the work increased as the dogs got older...directing mischievious little puppies to better outlets for play.  Remember?

Now multiply that by 100+.  By 100 little dogs that don't always have someone with them to correct inappropriate chewing.  By 100 little mouths looking for some way to relieve anxiety, boredom, and the pain of teething.  By the over 100 volunteers who are not only working to socialize puppies, but also working to prepare the adult dogs for a life with humans.

We really urge you to support the Operation New Beginnings Volunteers by participating in the Puppy Chew Toy Drive.  And help us count down the days to the first week of March...

Appropriate chew toys are solid rubber bones and balls made by "Kong", Nylabones and Gumabones in a variety of small sizes suitable for ES pups. These toys are available at most national pet stores or the following websites:

www.EntirelyPets.com <http://www.entirelypets.com/>

www.SitStay.com <http://www.sitstay.com/>

www.Dog.com <http://www.dog.com/>

www.Jbpet.com <http://www.jbpet.com/>

www.Drsfostersmith.com <http://www.drsfostersmith.com/>

We cannot use any fabric, fur or soft stuffed toys, or toys with plastic squeakers in them. These will just be destroyed and present choking hazards to the pups.

If you would like to help the puppies, please send (or have shipped) appropriate chew toys to one of the following volunteers:

2240 Shelter Island Drive, Ste. 210

Hamden, CT 06514

Martha Connolly
c/o Ernstrom & Dreste
180 Canal View Blvd., Ste. 600

To streamline the process, we will collect and ship weekly donations
to Montana.

The trial date has been set for May 4, 2009.  We continue to hear how more and more dogs are learning to trust human contact.  There are celebrations for each female that goes into heat confirming they are not pregnant.

Wow, it has been a month since the seizure.  It has been an extremely busy month.  Douglas just returned from Billings and posted this videos

This video is of Love and Happy helping the morning feed and clean crew in the bitches barn. Happy is the Lab and Love is the tri.  Love and Happy are in the first stall and slipped out while the feed and clean crew was working. Since they are both so social, the crew left them out to help. 1/28/09  We have received a donation of $1000 of medication from Schering Plough.  If you use this company please give them a big thank you.  We received a donation of 5,000 pounds of high quality dog food from a manufacturer that would like to remain anonymous.  There isn't much to report, the training continues, progress is slow but moving forward.  We don't have any further news on the trial date.  .

The computer has arrived and is being put to use.  Douglas Surber has arrived in Billings to help with training and assessing the dogs.  He reports that the volunteers are accomplishing amazing things with but are in need of further long term volunteers.  There are dogs that are slowly coming around but there are many that are still extremely shy.

An ongoing need is the ability to buy food to supplement the pregnant and lactating bitches. We have NESR volunteers looking for donations of vitamins and other supplements.  Anyone who would like to contribute directly to this need we are suggesting buying gift cards from Albertson's (a grocery store directly across from the Moore Lane) where they can purchase things like cottage cheese, and ground beef to supplement the bitches diet.    You can click here to purchase gift cards directly from Albertson's and have them sent to:

Thank you to everyone that has donated money to the rescue of these dogs.  Here is what we have spent so far. We have purchased a laptop computer, for $350  to help with the organization of the rescuers on the ground at the Metra (once they are finished it will be returned to NESR), we have purchased martingale collars for 150 dogs, we have funded Heather Houlahan's trip to Billings to assess dogs, help train the volunteers, and consult with all the authorities.  She has reported that everyone has been very receptive to her help and thanked her profusely.  She helped to establish the baseline protocols for working with the dogs.  Others  have volunteered to go to Billings to help from the ES community including, Erin McKee, Pam Kaye, and Douglas Surber.     In addition we continue to solicited companies for donations of dog food.

I am sure there will be other needs that we will fund as they become known to us.  We will also hold the majority of the funds in reserve to help with the transportation to foster homes, and expenses that will arise while the dogs are in foster care if/when the dogs are released.

Heather reports that taming of the dogs at the Metra continues. She is impressed with the work of the volunteer handlers and the progress some of the dogs are showing.  While passing a stall in the male barn Heather was stopped by the sight of two male dogs playing bowing to each other.  She said she hadn't realized until then that she hadn't seen any of these dogs playing.  It is a good sign that at least some of the dogs are progressing beyond pure survival mode and finding enough trust to actually play together.
