Abby in IL
Abby is one of 6 ES rescued from an IN shelter. The dogs had been turned in by a local Amish farmer. Abby is a young dog, just about a year old and has been spayed and is up to date on her shots.
Although timid initially, she has blossomed into a confident, trusting and happy dog. She loves to play with the resident ES and follows her people around where ever they go; a true English Shadow. She is quick to learn and has mastered the basic obedience commands of sit, down and leave it. Her recall is near perfect. She is almost housebroken; her new owner will just need to pay special attention to getting her out first thing in the morning or after confinement in a crate.
She has been exposed to farm life and accompanies her foster mom while she does chores. Abby has a fairly strong herding drive and will round up the chickens and turkeys. Whether due to this drive, her youthful exuberance or too much freedom (or possibly a combination of the three) she did manage to kill a turkey at her foster home. If placed in a farm home, she would be best placed with someone who can help her learn some restraint and how to channel her working instinct appropriately.
If you think Abby sounds like the right dog for you please contact Amy at brokeep@aeroinc.net
Tulip in IL
Tulip is a sweet velcro kind of dog. She came into NESR's care pregnant and delivered three pups June 7. We're estimating her age to be about 3.
Tulip gets along fine with the foster home's dogs and cat. She is appropriately protective of her pups but allows the ES she lives with to babysit and play with them. She bonds easily with people and in fact has jumped the 4 foot fence to follow her foster mom over to the neighbors house. She will also jump the fence to chase away the occasional pesky squirrel but will always return. Her recall is excellent and she seems to have a very biddable nature.
She would probably be happiest in a home where she would have some room to roam safely so she feels less of a need to test the boundaries. She meets and greets strangers well and is calm and gentle with children. She has been exposed to poultry and other farm animals but not enough to gauge whether she would be well suited to stock work.
For more info on Tulip contact: Amy at brokeep@aeroinc.net
Jasper in OR
Jasper is a one year old English Shepherd. He is enjoying his foster home. He is very responsive to basic training commands, sit, stay and come (come is alittle tough but he's getting it). He goes to kennel outside now on command. He sits to eat his meals with out saying a work and waits to be released. He is even coming into the house and sitting so his foster mom can wipe his feet!
He is going to new places with his foster mom so he can get some exposure to being around lots of people and different sounds, locations, etc. He loves playing with the other dogs and taking long walks.
For more information about Jasper, contact Judy at nesrinfo@yahoo.com. Please put Jasper in the subject line.
Autumn in MO
Autumn is a beautiful, loving and smart 2-yr-old, UKC registered, tri-colored female with one blue and one brown eye.
She is approximately 22 inches tall at the shoulder, weighs 70 lbs and is utd on all her shots.
Autumn is very shy around new people and prefers to keep her distance at first, but once she knows you’re her people she becomes a loving, loyal companion.
Autumn gets along with the resident dogs and cat but is not yet reliable around poultry. A bit hardheaded, Autumn is going to need a firm, consistent, patient handler to help her realize her full potential.
For more information about Autumn, contact sage_moon_naturals@yahoo.com . Please put NESR in the subject line.
Dante in IL
Dante is an approximately 2 yr old Operation New Beginnings dog who spent his first 7 months in a quiet foster home that didn't ask much of him other than to learn that there was such a thing as a safe place and kind people in the world.
As time progressed he moved to a second foster home that could challenge him a little more and help him to move beyond some of his fears. Within a month of being in his new foster home Dante has progressed a lot!
He now accepts handling and grooming and although he is still skittish, is getting better about being touched (and actually learning that it can feel good!) He walks on a leash well and understands that the leash is a precursor to good stuff like a walk through the pasture and woods or a visit into the house. He gets along well with the foster home's other dogs and pays the cats and free range poultry no mind. He is curious and not so shy that he avoids new things - he just prefers to hang back and observe a bit before being pushed into something new. He will take a treat very nicely from the hand of anyone in the foster family, including young children.
Dante is a dog that wants to connect. Although he is shy of being touched, he maintains eye contact with humans and remains near them. He needs a home that can show patience as he continues to progress past his fears but who will also challenge him and not make too many excuses for him. He is a dog that takes his cues from a confident leader. His foster home has taken to letting him "help" get the ducks in every night. When the last duck goes in and he is praised he brightens visibly so he may benefit from having some type of job to do to build his confidence. He has had no accidents in the house. He spends his overnights and part of the the day in a large kennel pen attached to a roomy barn stall but he prefers to wait for his walks to do his business so housebreaking shouldn't be an issue.
You can see Dante is action in this video clip:

Stanley in MN - ADOPTED
.
Curly in MT
Curly is an ONB dog that has learned a lot in his foster home. He is a neutered male, about 3 and half years old and weighs about 38 to 40 lbs.
He is a very sweet dog, does not show any aggression towards other animals or food. He is very fearful of strange people and new experiences, he loves to run and go for walks and to find a quiet place to rest.
He is a very easy dog to take care of if you have patience and love and understand how to approach him. He is not food oriented, so know that he will not be interested in you just because you have food in your hands. He is house broken.
Curly has recently learned to play with other dogs. He really has a very soft mouth when he is playing with the other dog at his foster home. He loves to run in an enclosed place with no people and no strange dogs around, he is ok with dogs he knows and trusts.
He likes massages and to be brushed. Curly will need a calm, patient person to show him that the world is not such a scary place.
For more information on Curly, please contact Catherine at: rambo1@bresnan.netand put Curly in the subject line.
Gracie in NY - Adoption Pending
Gracie has come a long way. She is a sweet lady. She loves to be brushed and has no issues with her toenails being trimmed. Gracie will alarm when visitors come, but is not aggressive to anyone. She loves children too. Gracie has become my second ES house dog and behaves herself. She sleeps on the floor either at the foot or beside the bed and sleeps all night. She waits patiently until I actually get up or sometimes, she licks my face to get me up when she really wants/needs to go out. Gracie is very attentive to where I am around the house. I have been successful in dropping a few pounds off her and getting the thick coat under control. She'll make a great addition to any family household.
For more information on Gracie, please contact Judy at: nesrinfo@yahoo.com and put Gracie in the subject line.
Pru in CA
Pru is a lovely tri-color female from Operation New Beginnings (ONB) in Montana. She walks well on leash, weighs 25 or 30 pounds, and is up-to-date on all of her shots.
Pru wants to be around humans but needs time to warm up to new human friends. As with many of the ONB dogs, she startles easily but recovers quickly. She gets along with the other dogs in her foster home, but has never been exposed to cats. She is very expressive and easy to read.
Pru is a looking for a loving home that will help her work through her shyness with patience and affection.
For more informtation about Pru please contact Irith (Ereet) at: musicitb@gmail.com and put Pru in the subject line.
Charlie in MN
Charlie is an Operation New Beginnings dog who was born shortly before the seizure. We believe that he and Cole are littermates.
Like Cole, Charlie is not suitable for a first-time handler. He will require a firm, but not heavy, hand and respect for his independence and initiative.
Charlie is an exceptionally bright dog. While his lack of early socialization means that he is surprised and startled by some things that other dogs take for granted, Charlie recovers from stress much more quickly than most dogs. He is agile and enjoys obstacles and he LOVES to fetch. Once Charlie has healed from surgery, he could be an excellent obedience or agility prospect. He would also enjoy tracking.
Unfortunately Charlie also had two badly luxated patellas. One was surgically repaired on January 18, 2010 and he is currently being rehabilitated in foster care. The other knee will be repaired in the spring of 2010.
Charlie went into an experienced foster home because of dog and human aggression that started when he very young. His dog aggression resolved almost immediately in his foster home, though he would not be a good housemate for a very small, fearful dog. Charlie is gentle, affectionate and easy for his foster family to handle, but is still aloof with strangers. His new owner will need to give him time to bond; and maintain him a calm and controlled atmosphere when he meets strangers until he acclimates to his new home. He will be an excellent partner for an experienced handler – this dog needs a job and he could excel at many things.
Charlie has not met cats but he is good with poultry. If he is still with us when his knee heals, we plan to start him on sheep. He appears to have eye.
Like Cole, Charlie is very small, around 25 pounds. He has a silky, low-maintenance coat.
For detailed information on Charlie, please visit his webpage at: http://smartdogs.wordpress.com/charlie/
If you are interested in adopting Charlie, please contact Janeen at: smartk9s@msn.com
Please put NESR Charlie in the subject line.
Sparky in OK
Sparky is an Operations New Beginning dog who came into foster care terrified of being approached or touched, crouched in the corner of the living room he claimed as “his” much of the time. With time and patience in his foster home, Sparky has become a truly different dog. Sparky’s foster mom says he is ready to bond with a person, that you can see it in his eyes that he is ready to do so. He is a very cute fellow, dainty in his habits. He is housebroken and comes when called. Like most ONB dogs, he is small for an English Shepherd.
He gets along well with the dogs in his foster home and his foster mom believes he would be good in a home with another dog or as an only dog as long as he was given plenty of attention. He gets along well with the resident cat in his foster home. If he is to be on a farm, he needs training with small livestock as he saw the backyard chickens at his foster home as prey, killing some of them. He is easily called off, though, if one is standing right with him and remains vigilant. He shows the ES desire to do what he is asked to do.
Sparky needs a person who will bond to him, work with him daily, and be patient as he learns to trust them. Sparky’s foster family sees great potential in him. He uses his nose more than any of the other dogs in his foster home, and would probably excel at work involving scenting. He needs time and love to bring out his potential, but working with him is very rewarding.
For more information on Sparky, please contact Kyt at: kyteubanks@gmail.com
Please put NESR Sparky in the subject line.
Jasmine in PA - Adoption Pending
Jasmine is a black and white English shepherd, born about September or October 2008. She was one of the Operation New Beginnings dogs from Montana.
Jasmine is active and energetic, and benefits from plenty of exercise and playing with the other dogs in her foster home. She has a decent obedience foundation, with sits, downs, and a cheerful recall. She is a soft dog who is somewhat shy, and tends to cower when approached from above, but this is improving with training. She is a fetching fool, but has not been able to play with people as much as she would like in her foster home, where there is too much competition from the other dogs. She might have potential as a frisbee dog.
Jasmine would do best in a dog-savvy home where her communications are understood by people who are proactive about showing her the right way to behave. She has been very well-behaved while in foster. If put into a situation where she felt defensive or territorial -- such as a fenced yard with foot traffic going by, or behind an invisible fence -- she will develop serious behavior issues. She looks to her humans for leadership when she's unsure; if left to decide for herself, she will make poor decisions.
Jasmine has shown some interest in helping with the farm chores, and might be a suitable cow dog with patience and training. She can get lively with the free-range poultry if there's another young dog to egg her on, but is easy to correct.
Jasmine gets along well with other ES, and is a bottom dog here in foster. She has been nippy with some strange dogs, in a way that shows she lacks confidence about them. She tends to fear the unfamiliar, but has fast and complete bounce-back. She would do well with other dogs in the home, provided she isn't bullied or permitted to bully.
Jasmine has been living in the house since late December, and is housebroken and very quiet in the house. Like most of the ONB dogs, she is petite -- less than 30 pounds. She is short legged and powerfully-built. She sleeps in a crate very contentedly.
She is fostering in Southwest Pennsylvania. She is available for adoption to the right home immediately.
For more information, please contact Heather at houlahan@zoominternet.net Please put 'NESR Jasmine' in the subject line.
Kip in NM
Kip is a young (approximately 13 month old), petite black and white female.
She accepts being groomed, including nails, without issue. Good with other dogs that have good dog-dog skills, she can be snarky with dogs that don’t respect her personal space. She is social with people she knows, and is improving with her response to strangers. While not fearful, she is cautious in new situations and takes her cue from other dogs and people in how to respond. She is energetic and has to be reminded the house is not for playing, but will settle down inside quickly. Kip is very athletic and despite her small size can easily keep up with the bigger dogs.
While Kip loves to snuggle, she does require a fair amount of exercise and mental stimulation. She has been started on basic obedience and loves to work.
Her house manners are good (once she is reminded not to zoom through the house) but she needs supervision to ensure she doesn’t get into trouble. She is crated when no supervision is available.
Kip can be pushy and would do best in a household where rules and boundaries are established and maintained.
For more information about Kip, please contact Kyt at: kyteubanks@gmail.com. Please put ‘NESR Kip ’ as your subject heading.

Norway
Norway is a 6 or 7 year old ONB dog. He weighs 30 lb. I have fostered Norway since September '09. Norway is easily frightened and a reserved dog but less so as time goes by. He secretly enjoys limited petting. He wants very badly to connect with people, and shows this by searching me out in the house and when he sees me runs back to his corner. He seems to need to know where I am. He will do this repeatedly.
Norway has started to independently explore the house, but of course returns to his corner very quickly, never venturing out very far. He does get braver about exploring each week. I have even caught him napping on the living room rug : ) He is a sweet dog, who keeps an eye on me intently.
Norway loves to romp in the yard with my other ES Bridget. He is navigating his world through her, If Bridget jumps in the car, then Norway jumps in the car. If Bridget walks through the doors to the vet, then Norway thinks it's okay too! At the Vet he sits in front of me, sitting and looking at my face, saying what next Mom, what do I do now? He looks to me for direction in unfamiliar situations.
Norway will wait at the back door with Bridget to go out. I can open the back door wide open, giving a "wait" command and Norway and Bridget stand still, making good eye contact with me, and wait until I say "OK" and then they fly out the door. I feel he is a dog quite able to make a strong bond with people. Norway makes progress every week, It is exciting to see tis. He will need a home that will continue to challenge him. He has wonderful potential.
Barry White in PA - ADOPTION PENDING
Barry White is a 5 year old English shepherd who came from Operation New Beginnings in Montana. He was one of the most cruelly treated of the dogs from this case, and did not make a lot of progress while in custody. He came into foster in September with many fears, but also a lot of potential. He will not be available for adoption until he has achieved a few more milestones at his foster home -- estimated about mid-Spring.

Owner Referral
Part of our mission is to assist owners of English Shepherds in finding new homes for their dogs when they can no longer take care of them. The following dogs are listed as a service to those who must give up their dogs and prefer not to surrender them to a shelter.
Since we have not seen or evaluated these dogs, we cannot make any representation or take responsibility for any dog's temperament or health. Prospective adopters should contact the owner of a dog directly.

Peggy is a 3 year old UKC certified English Shepherd. She is in great health, weighs 41 lbs, and is up to date on all her shots. She is a natural hunter and is trained to ‘sit,’ ‘down,’ ‘stay,’ ‘roll over,’ and will wait for the ‘okay’ at the food bowl every time. She is very loyal to us but is poorly socialized and exhibits a range of aggressive behavior to strangers. However, she consistently calms to overnight guests within a day or two. She is not spayed but has never had a litter.
We need to find a new home for Peggy because we simply do not have the time to work with her on our homestead. She has been in the role of watch dog for the last several years, but needs more work than that offers. Peggy is extremely high energy, has a very strong prey drive and is not socialized to our livestock. We originally wanted to integrate her into our farm activities but have been unable to take the time necessary to work with her on this.
The ideal new home for Peggy would be with someone who is knowledgeable in training English Shepherds and is interested in a dog that wants to be trained. She may do well with another dog, but considers cats to be prey. We are happy to provide more details to anyone who is interested. We live in the Finger Lakes region in upstate New York.
Please feel free to contact Noelia or Tim Springston at nlspringston@gmail.com or call 607-598-7193 for more information.

Other Rescue Organizations
The following dogs are with other Rescue Organizations and are possibly not English Shepherds but they are English Shepherdish enough to be listed here. All adoptions are handled by the fostering Rescue Group. Please contact them or visit their web sites for more info about these dogs and other fine dogs they have in rescue!
PetFinder is a website devoted to listing dogs from shelters and rescue groups around the country. You can search PetFinder by breed or region to find the right dog for your family.
There are often English Shepherds listed on the PetFinder pages although sometimes the breed identification seems a little iffy. However, here are some dogs currently on the PetFinder website who are either ES or ESy. NESR has no connections with any of these organizations and makes no promises regarding the dogs listed here from PetFinders. We offer this list in the interest of one stop shopping...
If you have any questions about finding what you're looking for on PetFinders email Lynn for help.

Michael in PA
Are you looking for a young, male, tri-color ES with tons of potential? If so, then I’m for you.
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is “Michael” and I’m about 7-8 months old and currently weigh 40-45 lbs. I am believed to be a purebred English Shepherd and I am currently living in PA with my foster family. Folks tell me I have a beautiful coat and that I am a wonderful boy – very intelligent and responsive.
Like lots of young ES, I am very active and like to have something to do to occupy my time. So, if you had a job for me that would be great. I’m currently taking lots of walks and running a couple miles a day with a member of my foster family. I like kids but would probably do best with older children (not toddlers).
I know some commands, am housebroken, neutered and UTD on shots. I’ve been told that I play a very polite game of ball. Don’t I sound great?!?
If you are interested in adopting me, please e-mail mcosby75@yahoo.com

Hi my name is Katie. I am a very sweet girl that loves attention. I am about 8 years old but you would never guess it by looking at me I am very energetic. My foster home has other dogs and I get along with them well, but I really don't like those things they call cats and would prefer a home without cats. I am not sure if I like kids yet my foster mom will have to see, I am new to the rescue. If you are interested in adopting Katie please e-mail us at animalresourcecenter@yahoo.com

Charlie in CT
Charlie is an ESy boy looking for his forever home. He is approximately 6 years old, neutered and up to date on his shots. His foster mom says: This is a dog who has a great attention span! When I am playing with Charlie I feel as if I am the center of his world. That feeling is a reminder to me that he deserves a home where his drives and intelligence are nurtured. I could see him enjoying agility or fly-ball. Don't let the white hairs fool you this guy has PLENTY of gas in the tank! We are fairly sure he has English Shepherd in him. He sure does look and sound like the breed descriptions. While Charlie looks like he could be all ES, we can never know for certain and therefore make no claims as to his heritage. Charlie's energy level is perfect. He is always up for a good game or a walk, but when it's time to hang out he is more than happy to take a spot on the couch and relax. He is not needy or whiny. I have heard him bark only once and it was at a man who had arrived at my neighbors house to do some work. A stranger. Smart dog! He is getting more relaxed every day with my other dogs. He seems to prefer smaller dogs and dogs who are very laid back. We have more work to do in this arena, and Charlie is a willing student!
You can see more information about Charlie on Petfinder at: http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/16085109?recno=0

A country home or a home with a fenced-in yard would be best for him. Hugo would love to be adopted into an active family. He would also enjoy learning how to fetch balls or Frisbees.
Hugo did well when introduce to a cat recently. He likes other dogs and would enjoy having company. As with all adoptions, we require a dog meet to help ensure a proper fit. Hugo has good play skills that children 5 and over would enjoy. He is a family dog through and through.
